Mission #26: |
Dear Vegan at Heart,
Today your mission is to read this cheesy mission and check out some cheesy recipes.
I run into people all the time who say they could neeeever go vegan because they caaaan’t live without cheeeeese. I was one of those people…until I read about veal calves being byproducts of the dairy industry. Then I went vegan and lost 15 POUNDS OF CHEESE!
The good news is that you can still enjoy the creaminess of cheese without eating a piece of cow’s curdled and cured breast milk. There is finally a fantastic vegan cheese called Daiya that closely resembles the taste and texture of dairy cheese without clogging your arteries. It's just hitting health food/natural food stores now, and many restaurants and pizzerias are using it too. Click here for locations. You can also buy it online at Pangea or Vegan Essentials.
Store-bought vegan cheeses are, um, an acquired taste. The one that I think comes closest to the taste of dairy cheese is Tofutti’s brand of American slices. Feel free to try different brands and flavors of store-bought vegan cheese.
In the meantime, I’d strongly suggest trying your hand at creating your own cheezy sauce using nutritional yeast, which is full of B vitamins. You can put it on sandwiches, veggies, or even a tofu scramble. Sooo…
Enjoy your adventures in vegan cheeseland!
Best,
Marisa
P.s. What are you having for breakfast tomorrow? I’m probably having steel cut oats with rice milk and blueberries thrown in.
Thanks for Daiya info Cheese has been the one thing I haven't been able to give up. I can't wait to try Daiya, and I can't believe that Kroger in my town in GA is carrying it! YEA! |
