Good news! The Environmental Protection Agency wants to require industrial farms, along with other major industrial contributors to global warming, to report their greenhouse gas emissions (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, etc.).
Bad news: Senator Schumer (along with Senator Thune of South Dakota) has introduced bill S. 527, which, if passed, will exempt livestock from the Clean Air Act and related requirements that would flow from it. This bill would give factory farms a free pass on having to shoulder their share of the burden regarding climate change remedies the Obama Administration and Congress want to put in place.
Industrial animal agriculture contributes 18% of overall global greenhouse gases (more than all the cars, buses, planes, boats, and other vehicles combined). We cannot allow such a major sector to be exempted if we are to avert climate change catastrophe in an effective and fair way. The Humane Society of the U.S., along with many environmental and sustainable agriculture groups, has long opposed efforts to exempt industrial farms from the Clean Air Act. Now it is time for each of us to speak up too!
WHAT WE CAN DO:
Please call Senator Schumer’s office ASAP at 202-224-6542 to politely, yet firmly let him know that you OPPOSE S. 527 because it unfairly exempts factory farms from the Clean Air Act and policies that address climate change. (If you want to say more, feel free, but this is all you really have to say.)
Note: For those of you who are new to my list, please don’t be bashful about calling. Such offices are well-accustomed to such calls. Remember, our lawmakers work for us and they want to hear our feedback. Moreover, since our opponents are never shy about calling, it is even more vital that we speak up. But, if any of you need a little “hand holding,” I’ll gladly be of service! J
As always, thank you,
